Hyperlinks

Hyperlinks are a large part of what make the internet so powerful. A hyperlink is an object on a page (usually a section of text or an image) that, when clicked, takes your site visitor to another page on the internet. As powerful as hyperlinks are, they are quite easy to create.

If you would like the link to open in a new window, see the Documents page for more information.

Step by Step

NOTE: The link you'll be creating needs the destination to already exist. For example, you cannot link to a page that hasn't been created yet, a form that hasn't been built, or a document that hasn't been uploaded to the internet. If your desired target isn't created yet, you'll want to make sure that happens first.

  1. The first step to creating a hyperlink is to create the object that will serve as the clickable target for the link. This can be a snippet of text like "Click Here" or an image like a "Register" button. If your page doesn't have the link target, type it out or insert the graphic.

For example each of the following three objects are hyperlinked to the exact same destination. (Feel free to give 'em a try.)

Fun things you can do with hyperlinks:

  1. Send an E-mail.
You can create a hyperlink, that when clicked, opens up the site visitors E-mail client, opening a new message to the address you specify.

    1. Use your cursor to highlight the text or select the image to which you wish to attach a hyperlink.

    2. Click the Insert/Edit Hyperlink button .

    3. Select the E-Mail option from the drop-down menu labeled Link To.

    4. Enter the E-mail address of whom you wish to send an email

    5. Click   OK   .

  2. Link to an anchor in the text.
In addition to creating a hyperlink to a specific page, you can also create a hyperlink to a specific location on a specific page. You can do this through the use of anchors. For example: a long page of an organization's 90 year history might need to be broken into decades.

    1. First you need to create the anchor. Select the text which you would like to serve as an anchor.

    2. Click the Insert/Edit Anchor button .

    3. In the window that pops up, enter the name for the anchor:

      Anchor-properties

    4. In this instance, 1970s was entered as the anchor, click   OK   .

a yellow anchor indicator will appear next to the text you've identified as an anchor (this will not appear to site visitors, it's just to show you that an anchor has been created)

    5. Make each one of the sections (decades) on the page an appropriately named anchor

    6. Now that you have defined "The 1970s" section of the page as an anchor, you need to create an easy way for the site visitor to navigate to that section of the page. To break down the decades at the top of the page, create a list that might look something like this:
                  1950s
                  1960s
                  1970s
                  1980s

                  etc.

    7. Now that you've created the anchors, you need to link to them. Select the text "1970s" at the top of the page and click the Insert/Edit Hyperlink button .

    8. From the drop-down menu labeled Link To select "External URL"

    9. The pop-up window will change allowing you to enter text. Type a pound sign (#) followed by the name of our anchor. In this case, we will end up with "#1970s".

    10. Click   OK   . Repeat for the remainder of the anchors which you would like to set up.
